But the "sport of kings" has become the sport for kids. Unlike casinos, where kids are forbidden to even loiter near a blackjack table or slot machine, race tracks have become almost like the theme parks of the gambling world. You must be 18 or older to go to the window and place a bet on a horse race in California. But that's a mere technicality. Del Mar Race Track these days is "family friendly," a place where kids study the tote board, pore over racing cards, pick the ponies and leap for joy when a winner crosses the finish line, right along with dad and mom.

Emerald Downs As an enticement for families, every summer Sunday is Kids Day, featuring pony rides, face-painters and clowns. Kids (and some adults) also find refuge in the video arcade, where they line up to ride the plastic ponies on the virtual horse-racing game.
